Starting Your SEND Journey

Noticing a difference

Everyone’s SEND journey is different. Some children show differences early on, but for others these may not become clear until they are older or even in their teenage years.

Children and young people all develop at their own pace, and differences don’t always mean there is a problem. But if something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to trust your instincts and look into it.

If you’re noticing changes in your child or young person’s behaviour, learning or wellbeing, it’s worth exploring what might help. This doesn’t always mean getting a diagnosis - sometimes small changes at home, in school or in daily routines can make a big difference. Support is available with or without a diagnosis.

If you’d like to talk things through, you can contact a Health Visitor or School Nurse on 01226 774411 for advice about development at any age.

Disabled Children's Register

If your child or young person has a disability or additional need, joining the Disabled Children's Register is a simple way to help us understand the needs of families in Barnsley. It can also help you stay informed about local services, activities, support and opportunities that may be of interest to your family. You don't need a formal diagnosis to join the register.

Joining the register is voluntary, and the information you provide helps services plan and improve support for children and young people with disabilities across Barnsley.

Information and Support for Parents and Carers

Getting Information Face-to-Face
In Barnsley, there's a monthly information session called the Local Offer Multi-Agency Drop-in. It's a place where you can meet SEND professionals such as the SEND Participation Team, Community Paediatrics, EHCP Team, SEND Improvement Team, Family Hubs, and more. Parents and carers find it helpful, especially if they're just starting their journey with SEND. It happens on the First Wednesday of the month from 10 am to 12:30 pm at The Ozone, Barnsley Football Club.

Evening Information Sessions
Barnsley's SEND Information Officer holds an information drop-in session on the Last Wednesday of every month at the Family Hub in Barnsley Market. The session runs from 5pm - 7pm, there's no need to book an appointment. You can come along and discuss any concerns you may have and they will help you to navigate SEND support in Barnsley giving you clear next steps and useful contacts.

Talking to other parents who understand
Joining a Parent Group is a good way of getting information, it's good to find out from parents what they experienced, and what worked well for them.

Many parent groups have active Facebook pages, including:

If your child is at school or nursery they may offer their own SEND parent group or coffee morning, talk to the SENCO to find out if they have one.
