You said, We did.

The Local Offer Website is always growing and improving, and your feedback plays a big part in that.

We regularly talk to parents, carers, young people and professionals about their experiences. We listen to what’s working well, what’s missing, and what could be clearer. Our main mechanism for this is through our weekly Local Offer Working Together Group, which takes place every Thursday morning from 10am - 12pm at Wombwell Library.

This page shows how your feedback has helped shape the Local Offer Website and the support available in Barnsley. It’s our way of being open about what we’ve heard and what we’ve done about it.

We are currently working with the SEND improvement service and Designated Clinical Officer to collate 'You said, We did' information relating to the wider Local Area across education, health and social care. This information will be shared as soon as it is available.

Starting your SEND Journey (June 2026 - Present)

You said:

  • You need information straight away when concerns arise or a diagnosis is received.
  • The page felt overwhelming and like a “dumping ground” of information.
  • Language can be confusing, with jargon and wording that doesn’t feel relevant.
  • It should include young people as well as children.
  • You want clear steps, guidance and who to contact, not just general information.
  • You don’t want to have to wait for a diagnosis to get help.

The information felt overwhelming and unclear. You wanted simple steps, clear language, and to know where to go for help – without waiting for a diagnosis.

We did:

We are redesigning the section to be clearer and easier to use, separating the information into topics with better structure, simpler language, and clearer signposting to support at every stage.

How we did this:

Through the Local Offer Working Together Group, gathering lived experience from parents, carers and young people, and working collaboratively with partner teams to shape and improve the content.

Things to Do (October 2025 - Present)

You said:
You wanted more information about local activities, groups and opportunities for children and young people with SEND. You wanted it to be clear if something was SEND specific or universal.

We did:
We started developing a dedicated “Things to do” section and are continuing to build it with information about local activities and opportunities.

We are working with providers across Barnsley to identify their SEND specific offer so that we can clearly identify these on the website, categorising activities into 'Inclusive Universal' or SEND specific.

We are always on the look out for more SEND specific activities and encourage people to let us know about what is going on in their community by emailing us sendlocaloffer@barnsley.gov.uk or by tagging us in posts on Facebook @BarnsleySENDLocalOffer

How we did this:
Through feedback from the Local Offer Working Together Group and consultation at Local Offer Live events, helping us understand what families and young people want to see. Where activities do not exist we are working with local providers to train and encourage them to offer inclusive activities and disability sessions.

Carers (August to October 2025)

You said:
  • You wanted information about support available for carers, including things like respite, wellbeing, benefits, and understanding your role as a carer.
  • Parents told us they found it difficult to recognise their role as a carer, in addition to being the child's parent.
  • Parents wanted to be able to easily find legal information such as information about power of attorney, appointees and what happens to tenancies or property if your circumstances change.

We did:
We created a dedicated Carers section on the Local Offer, bringing together key information in one place, including support services, wellbeing, training and financial information.

How we did this:
Through co-production with the Local Offer Working Together Group, developing ideas and content, then sharing drafts with the Barnsley Carers Forum for further input, and worked collaboratively with services to finalise and launch the section at Local Offer Live in October 2025.

Post 16 (April to October 2025)

You said:

  • You need clearer information about post‑16 options, including education, training and jobs.
  • There aren’t enough visible options for what comes after school.
  • You want information about real-life preparation for adulthood, not just education.
  • Events and information need to be easier to access and better organised.

We did:

  • Co‑produced a dedicated Post‑16 section covering key areas like employment, housing, travel and “things to do”.
  • Expanded content to include education, training, employment and life skills to support preparation for adulthood.
  • Improved event planning, including reviewing how post‑16 services are positioned and promoted at Local Offer Live.
  • Created volunteering opportunities for Barnsley & Beyond members at Local Offer Live, which included stewarding, supporting stall holders and content creation.
  • Continued developing content to make post‑16 pathways clearer and easier to navigate.

How we did this:

Through ongoing co-production with the Local Offer Working Together Group and Barnsley & Beyond (18 - 25 SEND Voice Group) including parents, carers, young people and professionals, from initial discussions through to testing and launch.

Health (Revised)

You said:
The section was generally useful and easy to navigate, but you wanted:
  • More detailed information about specific conditions (e.g. ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, genetic conditions)
  • Clearer explanations within sections so you know what to expect before clicking
  • Content that works for different people, including parents, young people, autistic adults and professionals, with better accessibility for those less confident online

We did:
We reviewed all feedback and updated the section, adding more detailed content, improving descriptions, and making changes to better meet the needs of different users.

How we did this:
We gathered feedback through an online form at the Autism Strategy launch, we then took the section back to the Local Offer Working Together Group for final review. We collected and tracked feedback sharing it with health partners and made the updates within a two‑week period, which were agreed by the working group. We continue to review and update the section as new feedback comes in.
