When your EHCP ends, what next?

After finishing your Further Education and Training, your EHCP will end.

🎓 You might move on to Higher Education,

👷‍♂️ Get a job or choose another path.

If you haven't found a job, entered Higher Education, or decided on your next step, your TIAG advisor will help you until you do, if you want to speak to your advisor you can ring them on 01226 775270 or pop into one of their regular drop-in sessions happening across Barnsley. 


Help becoming more independent
If you or your family members think you may need some more help being independent because of a learning or physical difficulty, you might want to look at the Children's Social Care page. It explains if you qualify for support, how to get it, and the types of support you might receive

If you are over 18, need ongoing health support and have a learning disability, you can talk to the Barnsley Adult Learning Disability Health Service on 01226 645237 (for Single Point of Access referrals) or 01226 645200 (for general enquiries). Visit their website here

More learning in adult education

There are a range of courses you can do once you have left Further Education.

Many of them are free and can help you with gaining skills, knowledge and experience to progress into employment, be more independent, develop and maintain friendships and being as healthy as possible.

There are three different settings in Barnsley with a wide range of courses that could suit you.

Some courses are specific for those who have learning difficulties and/or disabilities.

Finding a job or starting your own business

If you finished Further Education and want to work or start your own business but haven't done so yet, here are some options to help you reach your goals



Supported Internship
Supported Internship: If you need extra help with work experience and building job skills, a supported internship might be a good fit. Your EHCP continues for one more year. Check the Education & Training page for more details on how it can lead to a paid job.


Supported Employment and Volunteering service: 
This service helps with training, work placements, and finding paid jobs. They've helped lots of people in Barnsley with learning difficulties and or disabilities find work. Contact them at supportedemploymentservice@barnsley.gov.uk or ring 07818 561552.

This charity focuses on supporting people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities to find paid work or volunteering opportunities

Shared lives is where a carer opens up their home and family lives to include a young person or adult who needs extra support to live well. They become that person's carer; sharing their family and community life with them.
