ADHD

ADHD stands for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder that typically begins in childhood and often continues into adulthood. 

Autism

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts, and experiences the world. It is called a “spectrum” because it presents differently in each individual, with a wide range of strengths and challenges

Continence and Urology Service

The continence and urology service provides specialist assessment, treatment, and management for people with bladder and bowel conditions

Dentistry

Information about finding an NHS Dentist and local dental services for people with additional needs 

Diet & Nutrition

The community nutrition and dietetic service provides specialist dietetic advice for patients requiring nutrition support, as well as those with a range of conditions including diabetes, IBS, coeliac disease and other gastrointestinal disorders.

Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Dyscalculia

Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty that primarily affects reading and spelling.

Dyspraxia is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting motor coordination and planning. It can impact both gross motor skills (balance, posture) and fine motor skills (writing, fastening buttons).

Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty in mathematics. It affects understanding of numbers, number sense, and mathematical concepts.

Epilepsy

FASD

FASD stands for Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. It is an umbrella term for a range of lifelong conditions caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol, click here to read more. 

Genetic Conditions

Genetic conditions (or genetic disorders) are health problems caused by changes in a person’s DNA. There are hundreds of known genetic conditions, some are rare. This section has links to an A-Z of conditions, with signposts to further support where available.

Immunisations

The Barnsley immunisation team consists of registered nurses and healthcare support who deliver the national school age programme of immunisations in Barnsley.

Learning Disability

A learning disability affects the way a person learns new things throughout their life.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

Orthotics (bodily worn devices)

Orthotics are special supports like insoles, braces or helmets that help improve movement, comfort and posture. They can be used for feet, legs, spine or head.

Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy and occupational therapy help improve movement, independence, and daily living skills for children and young people.

Specialist Equipment, Aids & Adaptations

Specialist aids and adaptations make everyday life easier by providing equipment and adjustments to support comfort, independence and safety at home or school.

Speech, Language and Communciation

Speech and Language Therapy helps children and young people develop communication skills, supporting speech, understanding, and confidence in everyday life. Social Communication and Interaction support helps children and young people build skills for understanding, expressing themselves and forming positive relationships in everyday life

Vision

Vision services provide support and advice for children and young people with sight difficulties, helping them access learning and daily activities with confidence

A hospital passport is a document that brings together vital information on the patient, in an easily accessible format.

The use of hospital passports includes information about a person’s health needs, interests, likes, dislikes, how a person communicates and any reasonable adjustments that they might need.

The Little Journey smartphone app is a guide that takes children and their carers on a tour from the waiting room to the operating room around Barnsley Hospital, all through smartphone devices.
