Why volunteering can be great for parents

  • Learn new skills and gain experience that can be useful at home or work.
  • Access training and support to build your confidence and knowledge.
  • Meet other parents and carers and create new friendships.
  • Explore new opportunities or pathways back into work at your own pace.
  • Feel proud of what you’re achieving while giving back.
  • Boost your wellbeing and enjoy the rewarding feeling of helping others.

Parent Group Leader – Empowering Parents, Empowering Communities (EPEC)

Empowering Parents, Empowering Communities (EPEC)  is designed for parents and led by parents, making it friendly, relatable and supportive.

The programme brings together parents’ own experiences with trusted guidance and support from professionals, along with training and supervision to help you feel confident in your role.

What we’re looking for

  • Parents, carers, or people with parenting experience who want to support other families.
  • Friendly, reliable people who are good listeners and enjoy working with others.
  • Caring, non‑judgemental, and able to encourage families when they need it most.
  • Happy to learn new skills and understand the importance of confidentiality.

Do I need qualifications?

No formal qualifications are needed – just lived parenting experience and a positive attitude.

The programme supports parents of children from birth to the teenage years, including specialist support for autistic children and parenting together.

An enhanced DBS check and two references are required.

Join Our Best Start Parent Carer Panels – Make Your Voice Heard!

What is a Parent Carer Panel?
We want to make sure that our Best Start Family Hubs meet the needs of your local communities and our parent carer panels is one way that we do this.

The parent carer panels provide space for parent carers to work alongside local services to help design and evaluate if they are delivering what families need.
The panel members help to ensure that families are at the centre of service design and delivery across Barnsley and are able to feed back to those who are leading decision making.

Parent carer panel meetings take place at local Best Start Family Hubs at least once every two months.

We need you!
  • Help shape local services by sharing your experiences and ideas as a parent carer.
  • Work in partnership with professionals to improve support for families in our community.
  • Have real influence on decision‑making, planning, and service development.
  • Make a difference for your child and for families across Barnsley.
Everyone is welcome – no experience needed, just your voice and perspective.
If you are interested in joining our Best Start Parent Carer Panels email infoFIS@barnsley.gov.uk or sign up to one of our Parent Carer Panel induction sessions here.
