Barnsley Virtual School

Barnsley Virtual School is a website offering guidance and support for kinship carers. Its main role is to champion the education of children who are currently in care or have experience of care.

The Virtual School is led by a Headteacher and a team of professionals who use their expertise to provide tailored support for children and young people.

They believe education is the key to improving lives and work to ensure every child has access to a high-quality learning experience.

Virtual School Clinic for Carers and Professionals

Our Virtual School runs a weekly clinic for carers and professionals who want to explore support options for children in our care cohort.

When: Mondays, 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Where:1 Westgate, Barnsley, S70 2DR

There’s no need to book in advance, but if possible, please email us at virtualschool@barnsley.gov.uk beforehand. This helps us make sure the right team member is available to support you.

Barnsley SENDIASS

Barnsley SENDIASS offers free, impartial advice and support to:

  • Children and young people aged 0–25 who have, or may have, SEND
  • Their kinship carers
  • Families living in the Barnsley borough

SENDIASS can help with:

  • Understanding what SEND means and your child’s rights
  • Support with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
  • Advice on school placements and transitions
  • Help preparing for and attending school meetings
  • Guidance on appeals and resolving disagreements
  • Information about local services and resources.

If you’d like to talk to someone about the child in your care, SENDIASS can guide you every step of the way.

Barnsley Famiiy Hubs

Family Hubs are welcoming spaces where families can easily access a wide range of services in their community. They provide support from pregnancy through the early years and into later childhood—up to age 19, or 25 for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Family Hubs make it simpler for families to find the help they need. This can include:

  • Preparing for parenthood
  • Infant feeding advice
  • Parenting support
  • Guidance on family relationships
  • Mental health and wellbeing
  • Signposting to specialist services
  • Information about local groups and activities for families
