What are Healthy Start Vitamins

Healthy Start allows eligible families to get free vitamins. It’s for pregnant or breastfeeding women (until their child’s first birthday) and provides free vitamins for children (until their fourth birthday).


Under 18s who are pregnant automatically qualify for the national Healthy Start scheme, until their baby is born.

If eligible, you will receive a pre-paid Healthy Start Mastercard, which replaces the previously used paper vouchers.


You can use the Healthy Start Mastercard for:
• Baby Formula
• Milk and Food
• Collecting free Vitamins

The Healthy Start Vitamin Offer in Barnsley
In Barnsley Healthy Start vitamins are available for all families regardless of their family circumstances, at certain times.

Families will get:
• One free bottle of maternal vitamin tablets given at the antenatal booking appointment.
• One free bottle of infant vitamin drops given for breastfed babies at birth on discharge from hospital (or after a home birth).
• Three free bottles of infant vitamin drops for all babies from six months of age. Families will receive a text message reminding them to collect the vitamins from a Family Centre. The text message will be sent by Barnsley’s 0-19 Public Health Nursing Service.

Where can you collect Healthy Start Vitamins from using your Healthy Start Mastercard?
Women’s vitamins can be collected from Barnsley Hospital Maternity Services reception. Both women’s and children’s vitamins can be collected from main Barnsley Family Centres

Barnsley Main Family Centres are: 

  • Darfield
  • Jump
  • Kendray and Worsborough,
  • Athersley
  • Grimethorpe
  • Lundwood,
  • Thurnscoe and Dearne.
Family Centres are open Monday to Friday, drop in between 8:30am and 4:30pm

What if you aren’t eligible for the Healthy Start scheme?
Families not eligible for the Healthy Start scheme (after receiving the above free vitamins) can buy both women’s and children’s Healthy Start vitamins. 

Women’s vitamins cost £1 are available at:
• Barnsley Hospital Maternity Services reception
• Main Barnsley Family Centres 


Children’s vitamins cost £2 are available at:

• Clark’s Chemist (Penistone) 
• Main Barnsley Family Centres
